Montreal Panorama by André Cornellier
This exhibition has ended
The McCord Museum exhibits a monumental-size work by Montreal photographer André Cornellier. The ensemble, composed of more than 1300 photographs, constitutes a captivating and dynamic panorama of the City of Montreal.
Freely inspired by an 1896 concept of the Wm. Notman and Son studio, Cornellier created a 360 degrees photographic panorama of the city from atop a tower in Montreal’s Southwest borough. He took thousands of pictures at different times of day, over a one-year period, which he then pieced together to form a mosaic. In the process, he immortalized people moving along the street, buildings under construction, unexpected encounters: a multitude of short sequences of urban life that visitors will enjoy discovering and contemplating.
Montreal Panorama is exhibited next to the Wm. Notman and Son panorama, the work that inspired it. This is a unique opportunity to compare these two perspectives, created 100 years apart, and to observe the major changes that have shaped the Montreal landscape over the past century.
