Michel Jean
Michel Jean is an award-winning and much-loved writer, news anchor and investigative journalist of Innu origin from Mashteuiatsh. He worked at Radio-Canada after university and has been at TVA since 2005. He is the author of ten books and has also participated in several collectives and edited two collections of short stories featuring Indigenous voices, Amun and Wapke. He first wrote about his Indigenous roots in his novel Atuk, elle et nous. Released in Quebec in 2019 and in France in 2020, his recent book Kukum pays tribute to his great-grandmother, and was the best-selling novel in Quebec in 2021 and the second best-selling in 2020.
Shayne Michael
Hailing from New Brunswick, Shayne Michael is of Wolastoqiyik and Acadian heritage and is a member of the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation. He studied drama at the Université de Moncton before completing his bachelor’s degree in directing at Université Laval. He then spent two years perfecting his dance skills independently. He came to writing later in life, as he sought to put his ideas and experiences into words. His poetry is born from dance, and his writing process is rooted in the body and movement.
In 2019, Shayne was approached by Acadian poet Sébastien Bérubé to participate in a professionalization project for Francophone Indigenous authors in New Brunswick, sponsored by Éditions Perce-Neige and supported by Kwahiatonhk! His first collection, Fif et sauvage, was born in 2020 from this project. It is dedicated to his mother, who has a strong influence on his artistic practice. In 2021, the collection won the Prix Voix Autochtones in the category of “poetry published in French.”
