From April 18 to October 26, 2025, the McCord Stewart Museum is presenting the exhibition Pounding the Pavement: Montreal Street Photography. This project explores street photography as it has been practiced in Montreal from the 19th century to the present.

Little Burgundy – Evolving Montreal by Andrew Jackson

From February 21 to September 28, 2025, the McCord Stewart Museum presents Andrew Jackson’s exhibition Little Burgundy – Evolving Montreal, a foray into this south-western district of the city. Over a two-year period, the photographer documented important landmarks for the Black community and met people who grew up there, live there or still have ties to the area.

Costume Balls: Dressing Up History, 1870-1927

Beginning November 14, 2024, the McCord Stewart Museum presents Costume Balls: Dressing Up History, 1870–1927, a unique introduction to the world of fancy dress balls, some dating back 150 years. Over 40 dazzling costumes from the Museum’s collection, as well as photographs of costumed ball-goers, souvenir publications and programs, capture all the scope and pageantry of these prestigious occasions.

Media visits

Journalists with a press card can visit the Museum’s exhibitions free of charge during normal opening hours on presentation of the card.

Pounding the Pavement. Montreal Street Photography

Pounding the Pavement celebrates the practice of street photography in our city, from the 19th century to today. The 400-plus images featured in the exhibition shed light on the history, neighbourhoods and atmosphere of Montreal. The exhibition features 30 bodies of work captured by photographers who have endeavoured to document Montreal’s social fabric, each in their own way.

Costume Balls: Dressing up History, 1870-1927

A century and a half ago, extravagant costume balls and skating carnivals were the pinnacle of society entertainments, bringing forth a kaleidoscopic array of fanciful costumed characters and providing a unique opportunity to reinvent oneself as a historical figure. But, beneath all the anachronistic exuberance, these balls reinforced core myths of colonial destiny and imperial futures.

For over one hundred years, the Museum has been building its rich collections of objects, images and documents that bear witness to the social history of Montreal, the city’s place within Quebec and Canada, and the vitality of Indigenous cultures.

The site also features approximately 144,000 royalty-free images that may be downloaded in the highest resolution available, free of charge, with no restrictions on their use. Created to provide unparalleled access to the McCord Stewart Museum’s collections, the project is a first for the institution.
