Film Screening: A Close-up of Three Photographers
Free activity | Space is limited, Reservation required
During the Journées de la culture, attend a screening of the three films Eye on the Guy: Alan B. Stone & the Age of Beefcake, Albedo and Jongué: A Nomad’s Journey, exploring themes from the exhibition Pounding the Pavement. Montreal Street Photography. The screening will be followed by commentary from Zoë Tousignant, Curator of Photography at the Museum and curator of the exhibition.
Eye on the Guy: Alan B. Stone & the Age of Beefcake
Like his American contemporary, physique photographer Bob Mizer, Alan B. Stone was a cultural pioneer. Before the first wave of gay liberation, and long before Calvin Klein’s poster boys marched into public view, Stone was taking hundreds of erotic photos of men and running an international mail-order business from his Montreal basement. Philip Lewis and Jean-Francois Monette’s documentary is a fascinating and fitting tribute to Alan B. Stone, pioneer of beefcake photography.
Eye on the Guy: Alan B. Stone & the Age of Beefcake, Canada, 2006, 49 min, Philip Lewis and Jean-François Monette. In English with French subtitles.
This film contains nudity.
Albedo
Tormented by deafness and illness, photographer and archivist David Marvin took his own life in 1975. This part fiction, part documentary feature film draws a parallel between Marvin’s life and the history of Griffintown, a Montreal neighbourhood he chronicled faithfully. The film is also a strange and fascinating portrait of an era—including the influx of Irish immigrants, the Great Flood and the inauguration of the Victoria Bridge in 1859—presented in a unique light.
Albedo, Canada, 1982, 54 min, Jacques Leduc and Renée Roy. In French.
This film contains references to suicide.
Jongué: A Nomad’s Journey
A film about photographer and writer Serge Emmanuel Jongué. After immigrating to Quebec to escape his family’s shadows, wounds and silences, he spent his brief life exploring his multiple origins.
Jongué’s life is told chronologically through his own texts, images and talismans, from his birth in Aix-en-Provence to his untimely death in Montreal.
Jongué: A Nomad’s Journey, Canada, 2019, 80 min, Carlos Ferrand. In French and English with French subtitles.
