National Indigenous History Month

June 7 to 11, 2023

Show: CIVILIZED

Paid activity | Space is limited, reservation required.

CIVILIZED is inspired by actual reports, writings and speeches from Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s government. The play features William Blank, a fictional government bureaucrat resurrected from the year 1907, who with gusto, charm, poetry, song and conviction, vainly attempts to defend the indefensible—the Indian Residential Schools—only to yield to what he’s sensed all along; something was horrifically wrong. The solo show debuted in 2022 to rave reviews in several cities in Ontario and Manitoba.

CIVILIZED is performed by award-winning Métis actor John D. Huston, written by Montrealer Keir Cutler, and directed by the former artistic director of Montreal’s Repercussion Theatre, Paul Hopkins. CIVILIZED set design is by Jay Havens, a multi-media 2Spirit artist, educator, and collaborator of Kanien’keha’ka and Scottish Canadian ancestry.

Presented as part of the National Indigenous History Month and the Montreal Fringe Festival.
