As part of the exhibition Wampum: Beads of Diplomacy
December 30 | 1:30 p.m.
Wampum workshop: Honouring your word with PAAL Partageons le monde
Free | Space limited, no reservation
Take part in a family oriented wampum-making workshop hosted by PAAL Partageons le monde and presented alongside the exhibition Wampum: Beads of Diplomacy.
Before the arrival of European colonizers, the Kanien’kehaka had no need for written documents to honour their word. Commitments were made verbally and were simply respected. In today’s world, respect for words has tended to erode for lack of honesty. However, integrity – an essential life value – comes from respecting and honouring one’s word.
To represent the importance given to words and the commitment to respect them, the Kanien’kehaka use the wampum belt during ceremonies to remember the word or the promise that has been made. Come learn more about this important aspect of Indigenous cultures.
Workshop hosted by PAAL Partageons le monde.
