A Century of Red River Coats
The McCord’s Inside Stories
January 23, 2018
Navy wool coats with red piping and hoods, worn with red sashes, toques, and mittens, were once practically the winter uniform of Montreal children. Known as Red River coats or Capuchin coats, those who wore them can vividly recall the mix-ups in the school cloakroom and the smell of wet wool.
Through this lecture, Cynthia Cooper, Curator, Dress, Fashion and Textiles, tells their story from their fur trade origins to their decline in popularity over a century later.
