Student Poster Contest
From March 12 to 31, 2024
Marc H. Choko Scholarships
Annual Design Competition Organized by the SDGQ
From March 12 to 31, 2024, in the McCord Stewart Museum Atrium! These posters on the theme “One roof, one right!” were selected from among the submissions to the Société des designers graphiques du Québec (SDGQ) annual design competition for the Marc H. Choko Scholarships.
This annual contest, in its tenth edition, is intended for students registered in a graphic design program in a college or university that is officially recognized by the Québec government. It aims at developing their skills and encouraging them to work in the field of poster design, especially in the context of promoting a cause for the common good.
Housing is a right!
Across the globe, hundreds of millions of people are living in substandard housing, war zones, or makeshift camps. Closer to home, the jump in housing costs is having a severe impact on the less privileged residents of many cities.
While the right to housing has been internationally recognized as a fundamental right, housing continues to be treated as a commodity. Only government action to ensure access to affordable housing for all can guarantee that right and improve the living conditions of those most in need.
For the 2023-2024 contest, SDGQ decided to team up with FRAPRU (Front d’action populaire en réaménagement urbain). FRAPRU believes that housing is an essential fundamental right to which every person should enjoy full access. The housing rights group also believes that the government has a central role to play in housing, and that it must make it a priority to develop social housing and ensure the presence of a strong, non-speculative sector in the form of public, cooperative, and not-for-profit housing. FRAPRU is committed to achieving greater control for all citizens over their housing conditions, neighbourhood planning, and living environments.
