The McCord Stewart Museum to create Art Deco displays for the 9th floor of the Eaton Centre
Press Release
Montreal, April 12, 2024. – As part of the renaissance of the Eaton Centre’s legendary 9th floor by Ivanhoe Cambridge, the McCord Stewart Museum is designing 6 window displays at the entrance to this magnificent venue. These displays will be previewed at the Museum’s benefit events, the Grand Ball and the Sugar Ball, on May 2 and 3 respectively.
This collaboration with the McCord Stewart Museum was an obvious choice for the team of Le 9e, given the Museum’s roots in the city and its work to highlight the stories, lives and creativity of the individuals and communities that make it up. In keeping with the exceptional architecture of the site, the Museum has selected artworks and objects from the Art Deco period, as well as some older Art Nouveau pieces. Against a backdrop of oriental-inspired wallpapers designed by Thomas Pinnington Johnston (1897-1997), the display will feature furniture, tableware and decorative objects in glass, bronze and ceramics. Photographs from the Museum’s collection will also decorate the soon-to-reopen Île-de-France restaurant.
“We are delighted to be able to present objects from our collection in this remarkable venue, which is sure to regain its place among the city’s most iconic landmarks. Our team was keen to help develop and promote this unique architectural heritage by collaborating with Le 9e,” explains Anne Eschapasse, President and CEO of the Museum.
“The 9th is delighted to partner with the McCord Museum, which shares our passion for Montreal’s history, as well as its architectural, gastronomic, and artistic culture. We are privileged to be able to continue the legacy of the 9th by creating lasting memories for generations to come,” says Jeffrey Baikowitz, Chairperson of the 9th.
The artistic director of the Foundation’s two benefit events, Dick Walsh, has a special connection to the site, which he knows inside and out. When he was just starting out in the fashion and events world, Eaton’s was where he first gained recognition for his talents, presenting avant-garde window displays and staging spectacular fashion shows. It will be interesting to see what this master of lighting has in store for guests at the Museum balls on May 2 and 3, 2024.
The Grand Ball is sold out, but tickets are still available for the Sugar Ball organized by the Museum Foundation’s young philanthropists. Funds raised at this annual event help support the Museum’s mission of preserving and transmitting our cultural heritage, through innovative exhibitions and programming.
